Enhancing bus stop safety through various measures and enforcement

Media Replies 05 Jun 2025 bus stops active mobility

We thank Zhang Xin Yuan for his letter “Bicycles crossing bus stops pose many hazards” (29 May 2025).

Ensuring safety and accessibility at public bus stops is one of LTA’s key considerations when it comes to bus stop designs. Where space permits, we have been building bypass paths behind bus stops to minimise interactions between active mobility users and commuters. Cyclists are to use these bypass paths and to give way to commuters and other vulnerable users, such as those in wheelchairs and strollers. We have also implemented other safety measures and visual cues such as ‘SLOW’ markings, rumble strips, and guiding lines to guide cyclists to slow down and cycle behind bus stops. Where bypass paths are not available, cyclists are to slow down near bus stops, and dismount where necessary, particularly when passengers are boarding or alighting.

Under the Active Mobility Act, it is an offence for cyclists to speed on public paths or to ride recklessly in a manner that endangers others. LTA takes a serious view of such behaviour, and our enforcement officers will take firm action against riders whose behaviour pose a risk to public safety.

Members of the public can report errant riding through LTA’s online feedback form at www.lta.gov.sg/feedback. LTA will take such feedback into account when addressing the issue on the ground. We will also continue to educate and remind users on safe and responsible riding.
