The inaugural Bus Safety Roadshow will take place at Toa Payoh HDB Hub atrium on 23 and 24 August 2025. The roadshow is one of the Bus Safety Tripartite Taskforce’s (BSTT) recommendations to raise awareness and promote public bus safety among commuters and road users. Senior Minister of State for Law and Transport Murali Pillai was the Guest of Honour at the launch of the roadshow on 23 August 2025, where he unveiled safety-themed bus wraps designed by the Public Transport Operators (PTOs).
2. Jointly organised by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Ministry of Transport, the event is supported by stakeholders such as the National Transport Workers’ Union, Traffic Police, Singapore Road Safety Council (SRSC) as well as the PTOs (Go-Ahead Singapore, SBS Transit, SMRT Buses and Tower Transit Singapore).
3. Members of the public attending the roadshow can look forward to exhibition booths and presentations on safety tips for bus passengers, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. They can also take part in interactive activities and experience driving a bus via a bus simulator.
Ongoing efforts in implementing BSTT recommendations
4. Since the BSTT’s recommendations were announced in March 2025, LTA has been working with the tripartite partners and relevant stakeholders to progressively implement these changes to better support our bus captains and enhance bus safety.
Enhancing Training and Working Conditions for Bus Captains
5. The “BC Drive Safe” refresher programme will be increased from three to five sessions a week by the end of this year, allowing more bus captains to attend and benefit from this refresher programme. A standardised industry-wide training point system will be introduced by the end of 2026, to ensure that bus captains receive a minimum amount of training every year. Additionally, to recognise consistent safe driving practices/records by bus captains, LTA is working with PTOs to introduce a tiered safe driving incentive in 2026.
6. LTA and PTOs have started extending the minimum duration of bus captains’ meal breaks to 30 minutes, which will progressively be extended to the entire bus captain workforce in the next few years.
Improving Tools and Equipment Used by Bus Captains
7. Since 4 August 2025, LTA has been piloting audio safety announcements on 11 bus services which serve areas with higher elderly populations or are more frequently used by senior citizens. These announcements remind passengers to hold onto hand grips and grab poles before the bus moves off from the bus stop. LTA will evaluate feedback from commuters before assessing whether the initiative should be further expanded across the bus fleet.
8. Technological and safety features that aid BCs in their work are being incorporated in new bus purchases, starting with the procurement of 660 electric buses in March 2025, while existing buses will be retrofitted with these where feasible. Such features include the anti-fatigue system, 360-degree collision warning system with artificial intelligence, camera mirror system and improved torque management which aims to reduce jerky movement of buses during acceleration.
More Conducive Road Environment for Bus Captains to Work In
9. To enhance bus service reliability and safety, LTA will step up enforcement efforts against traffic violations along bus routes. Following a call for solution in 2024, LTA is now testing an AI-powered system that analyses bus camera footage to automatically detect and identify vehicles that encroach into bus lanes during bus operation hours. In the interim, we will continue to encourage bus captains to report offences, such as unauthorised use of bus lanes and illegal parking along bus routes. LTA and PTOs are also reviewing ways to improve bus movement at bus stops without bus priority measures, such as introducing more bus priority boxes.
Strengthening Public Education on Bus Safety
10. Beyond the roadshow, LTA has been actively collaborating with PTOs, SRSC and the Traffic Police to promote safe commuting practices. This includes publicity efforts via awareness posters, social media campaigns, and engagement with schools. Since May 2025, LTA has also partnered with the Agency for Integrated Care to conduct bus safety talks on safe commuting practices at Active Ageing Centres.
Tripartite Commitment to Upholding Public Bus Safety
11. Tripartite partners will continue to work together to see through the implementation of the proposed measures and uphold our commitment to enhance the safety of our bus captains, commuters and other road users. Even as we do so, maintaining service standards will remain a priority as we implement these measures and refine operational processes.
12. We also seek the support of commuters and all road users to do their part in keeping bus journeys safe for everyone.
