Developing Future-Ready Technical Capabilities and Driving Innovation Across the Public Bus and Rail Industry

News Releases 24 Oct 2026 Singapore Bus Academy public transport

The biennial Singapore BusTech and RailTech Grand Challenges took place on 24 October 2026 at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College West. The event brought together public transport professionals and students to develop innovative solutions to tackle real world transport challenges. The Challenges gave participants the opportunity to put their skills into practice, exchange knowledge and explore how emerging technologies can improve public transport. Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance, Mr Jeffrey Siow, presented awards to the winning teams.

2.             The Grand Challenges are organised by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and its transport academies – the Singapore Bus Academy[1] and Singapore Rail Academy[2] – together with the National Transport Academy (NTA), and supported by NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute (e2i).

3.             The BusTech and RailTech Grand Challenges are part of broader efforts to strengthen the capabilities of Singapore’s public transport workforce and prepare the industry for a more technologically advanced future. Through practical challenges and innovation competitions, participants had opportunities to sharpen their technical skills, apply new technologies and develop solutions to real world problems. The Grand Challenges were also an opportunity for close collaboration between public transport operators, industry partners and educational institutions, while giving students valuable industry exposure and insights into career opportunities in Singapore's public transport sector.

Singapore BusTech Grand Challenge

4.             The BusTech Grand Challenge tested participants’ technical knowledge, problem solving abilities and practical skills. In the bus technician category, eight teams from the four public transport operators, SBS Transit, SMRT Buses, Tower Transit Singapore and Go-Ahead Singapore, competed in a series of practical challenges involving electric bus diagnostics and troubleshooting of high-voltage battery systems. Participants were evaluated on their technical competencies, diagnostic capabilities, and compliance with safety requirements.

5.             In the student category, 12 teams from seven Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs)[3] were tasked to design and develop prototypes for an integrated Autonomous Passenger Assistance System to enhance accessibility and better support passengers with diverse needs. Their solutions used advanced sensing, machine learning and automation technologies and were evaluated on their viability, functionality, and creativity.

Singapore RailTech Grand Challenge

6.             The RailTech Grand Challenge focused on strengthening rail engineering competencies and encouraging innovation in rail operations and maintenance.  In the Hands-On Practical Challenge category, six mixed teams comprising rail technicians and ITE students tackled real-world engineering tasks across four core rail system domains, namely signalling, rolling stock, power and permanent way systems. Each team comprised two rail technicians serving as mentors to three students, providing opportunities for experienced practitioners to share their knowledge and expertise with the future generation of our rail workforce. Teams were assessed on their technical skills and competencies in modifying signalling circuits and troubleshooting a high-speed circuit breaker. A theory segment was also introduced this year to strengthen students’ understanding of rail safety and engineering fundamentals.

7.             In the Open Innovation Challenge category, 11 teams from eight IHLs[4] were tasked to develop innovative solutions to automate Light Rail Transit vehicle mileage tracking and demonstrate how their solutions could be applied in a Rapid Transit System environment. Their proposals were evaluated based on innovation, effectiveness, feasibility and scalability.

Public Transport Career Fair

8.             Beyond encouraging continued capability development in the public transport workforce, the Grand Challenges also sought to expose more students to the exciting opportunities in the public transport sector. To further encourage Singaporeans to consider a career in public transport, in conjunction with Public Transport Workers’ Appreciation Month in November, e2i will organise a Public Transport Career Fair on 17 November 2026. The fair will be held at the Devan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability, and will feature more than 600 job vacancies from LTA and public transport operators, with opportunities ranging from Deputy Managers and Assistant Engineers to Enforcement Officers, Station Managers, Bus Captains, Bus Technicians and Technical Officers.
