We thank Mr Tan Lai Hock for his feedback (“Step up checks on vehicles with heavily tinted windows”, 29 Oct).
Vehicle owners may use tinted films with heat-reduction technologies, provided they: (i) allow at least 70% of visible light to pass through the front windscreen and front side windows, and at least 25% for the rear windscreen and rear side windows, (ii) are non-reflective, and (iii) do not interfere with any signal transmission between the Electronic Road Pricing gantry and In-Vehicle/On-Board Unit. These requirements ensure drivers have sufficient visibility of the roads and environment around them, and that vehicle occupants can be identified for enforcement purposes.
LTA conducts regular enforcement checks islandwide against illegally modified vehicles including vehicles with overly tinted windows. These checks are in addition to the periodic vehicle inspections. From 2023 to 2025, LTA has issued more than 4,000 summonses annually for various illegal modification offences, including illegal tinted windows. Beyond penalising errant motorists, LTA also targets workshops that facilitate such illegal modifications.
All vehicles used on Singapore roads, including foreign-registered vehicles, must comply with our laws and regulations. Motorists found with illegally modified vehicles face fines of up to $20,000 or imprisonment of up two years, or both. Penalties are doubled for repeat offenders. For non-individuals (e.g. workshops), first-time offenders can be fined up to $40,000 and repeat offenders up to $80,000.
Members of the public who encounter errant vehicles can report them via the OneMotoring website.
