We thank the writer for her feedback on bus Service 15 (巴士台阶对年长者造成不便, 5 June 2025).
Our newer buses are intentionally designed to have low floors so that passengers, including the elderly can board or alight to the kerb more easily.
However, raised platforms within the bus are needed to site components such as wheel arches, motors, battery packs, and other essential equipment, some seats are located on these platforms on either side of the aisle. On certain bus models, the raised platform is higher than for diesel buses.
To address this, we have been working closely with bus manufacturers to modify the raised platforms. The modifications involve raising the floor level in these areas, reducing the step height to most seats to no more than 230mm.
These modifications have been progressively rolled out since October 2025. Buses are taken out of service in phases. We expect to complete all modifications by end-2026.
In the meantime, bus captains have been advised to be particularly attentive to elderly passengers who may need assistance. Priority seating remains available at floor level near the front of each bus. We also encourage commuters to be gracious and offer their seats to those who need them more.
We are committed to ensuring our public transport system remains accessible, inclusive and comfortable, and appreciate the patience of commuters as we implement these improvements.
