Factsheet: Cross Island Line Trains: Features and Testing on Track

            The Cross Island Line (CRL) will be served by a new fleet of 44 fully automated, six-car trains, with an option to procure up to 11 additional trains to support future ridership growth. The trains will be delivered progressively from 2027 ahead of the opening of CRL Phase 1 in 2030. 

2          The first CRL train arrived in Singapore on 31 May 2026 and is currently undergoing testing at the Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC), a dedicated facility designed to allow rigorous testing and commissioning of trains and other core railways systems for both new and existing rail lines. 

3          At the SRTC, the  train will undergo a comprehensive series of validation tests  covering rolling stock, signalling, Integrated Supervisory Control System (ISCS), and communications systems. These tests will validate the interfaces, functionality, operational performance and safety requirements of the train systems under normal, fault and emergency scenarios, ensuring that they meet stringent safety and performance standards before being tested on the actual CRL network. Following the completion of testing, the train will be returned to the manufacturer, CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co., Ltd and Singapore CRRC Sifang Railway Vehicles Service Pte. Ltd (CRRC Sifang) for final refurbishment works on the fleet before they are delivered for passenger service. 

Features of CRL Trains

4          Designed for Singapore's longest fully underground MRT line, the CRL trains incorporate features that improve commuter comfort, accessibility, operational reliability and maintenance efficiency. 

Seamless boarding and alighting

a.     Each train car has five doors on each side, compared with four doors on most existing train lines. This enables commuters to board and alight more quickly, reducing dwell times at stations and supporting more efficient train operations. Additionally, CRL trains are fitted with micro sliding plug doors, which provide enhanced noise insulation to enhance the overall commuting experience.

a.     The CRL trains will operate using a 1,500V DC Overhead Conductor Rail (OCR) system. This improves energy efficiency and suits the demands  of a long, high-capacity underground line like CRL.

Automation and Smart monitoring

        a.     To enhance operations and maintenance, the CRL trains will include condition monitoring and diagnostic systems for early detection of potential equipment faults. New functions such as axle box and gearbox monitoring have also been incorporated for CRL. Selected trains will also be equipped with an Automated Track Inspection system to monitor the condition of the running rail and OCR in real time. 

        b.     The CRL trains will operate using Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system, enabling fully automated, driverless operations while maintaining high standards of safety, reliability and service frequency.
