North East Line Extension
Easier journeys are ahead for Punggol residents as the North East Line Extension (NELe) connects Punggol MRT station to the new Punggol Coast MRT station.
The 2-kilometre extension to the new Punggol Coast Station now brings the total number of stations on the NEL to 17. This will cut travel time from Punggol North to the city centre and other parts of Singapore by up to 15 minutes. The Punggol Coast station will also provide greater rail connectivity to the JTC Business Park and the Singapore Institute of Technology, as well as the upcoming Punggol Coast Mall.

A total of six new NEL trains will be added to cater for additional capacity for the NELe operations in 2024.
This increases the existing NEL fleet by 14 per cent from 43 to 49 trains. Manufactured and assembled in Spain, the new trains will be equipped with condition monitoring systems, to gather data from equipment on the trains. This enables continuous monitoring of the health of the equipment and allows for predictive maintenance for the trains.
