North East Line Extension
Easier journeys are ahead for Punggol residents when the North East Line Extension (NELe) connects Punggol MRT station to the new Punggol Coast MRT station.
Residents in Punggol North can expect faster access to an MRT station, reducing the need for a bus or LRT connection. This will cut travel time from Punggol North to the city centre and other parts of Singapore by up to 15 minutes.
The NELe will complement the first phase of the Punggol Digital District, which will create an attractive live-work-learn-play environment for residents, workers and students.
The Punggol Coast MRT station is the first to be conceptualised using design thinking. With commuters in mind, LTA gathered commuter feedback, conducted studies and prototyped concepts to create a more communal and vibrant community space.
Based on the findings, more open public spaces will be incorporated into the station for social interaction and meet-ups.

A total of six new NEL trains will be added to cater for additional capacity for the NELe operations in 2023.
This increases the existing NEL fleet by 14 per cent from 43 to 49 trains. Manufactured and assembled in Spain, the new trains will be equipped with condition monitoring systems, to gather data from equipment on the trains. This enables continuous monitoring of the health of the equipment and allows for predictive maintenance for the trains.
