Factsheet: Go on a Car-Free Adventure This September

News Releases 22 Aug 2024 World Car-Free Day (WCFD) Factsheet

In conjunction with World Car-Free Day, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in partnership with Health Promotion Board (HPB), Housing and Development Board (HDB), National Heritage Board (NHB), JTC Corporation (JTC), National Parks Board (NParks), Singapore Art Museum (SAM), Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), and public transport operators (PTOs), SBST and SMRT, is organising a month-long series of car-free activities for the public this  September.

2.        Since 2000, World Car-Free Day (WCFD) has been celebrated annually on 22 September by cities across the globe to encourage motorists to go car-free and opt for alternative commute modes to reap the benefits of reduced carbon emission and improved physical well-being. WCFD supports the Sustainable Living pillar under Singapore Green Plan 2030 and promotes Singapore’s car-lite vision by creating greater public awareness about the benefits of walking, cycling and riding public transport as green and sustainable ways to travel.

3.        Over the years, LTA has implemented several initiatives to encourage the use of greener transport modes and build greater awareness of environmental sustainability. Beyond expanding our Public Transport network, we have also been enhancing the walking and cycling experience through expanding the cycling network and initiatives such as Friendly Streets and road repurposing. These infrastructural improvements are supported by campaigns and outreach efforts such as Car-Free Sunday 2024, the Move Lite campaign and the One Earth Challenge, all aimed at encouraging a car-lite lifestyle.  More information on these initiatives can be found in Annex A.

4.        For this year’s WCFD, LTA, with various government agencies, organisations and PTOs, will be organising various activities to encourage people to “Go on a car-free adventure” in the month of September and experience the environmental, health and social benefits of going car-free.

Highlights of World Car-Free Day 2024

5.        Starting today, public can sign up for various tours and activities organised by the different organisations to kick-off their car-free adventure.

6.        LTA will organise two guided tours for the public – (a) A visit to the Singapore Mobility Gallery & Ulu Pandan Bus Depot, and (b) Elevating Walking and Cycling Experience Tour, which will showcase how LTA works with industry partners to create safer and more conducive environments for walking and cycling.

7.        Other activities include HDB’s guided sustainability tour along the Punggol Northshore Trail, NHB’s HiddenSG @ Katong-Joo Chiat, NParks’ Lights by the Lake at Jurong Lake Gardens, and URA’s Singapore City Gallery Community Tours. These initiatives reflect our collective effort to encourage greener modes of commuting and transport, while exploring our city and celebrating its commitment to sustainability. Further reflections on our city and spaces are also explored through public art tours and self-guided walking trails by SAM’s public art initiative The Everyday Museum.

8.        More information about the activities available for the public can be found in Annex C and details will progressively be made available on LTA’s website closer to the event.
