1,000 Motorists to Participate Across Five Locations from June to July 2026
From 1 January 2027, all Singapore-registered motor vehicles must have the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) ERP 2 On-Board Unit (OBU) installed to travel on public roads in Singapore. The ERP 2 system is on track for implementation on 1 January 2027. To date, more than 96% of Singapore-registered vehicles have been fitted with the OBU.
User Experience Study to Test New ERP Charging Experience
2. The new ERP 2 system leverages Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology, eliminating the need for physical gantries on Singapore’s roads. The OBU detects when a vehicle passes an ERP charging location and calculates the applicable ERP charges.
3. With physical ERP gantries no longer serving as markers of ERP charging locations from 1 January 2027 under ERP 2, LTA is trialling the use of new road signs and markings as visual cues for ERP charging locations. The new signs and markings will complement OBU alerts, which will notify motorists in advance of ERP charge locations, provide information on prevailing ERP charges and indicate the amount charged within the location.
4. To test the effectiveness of the new ERP road signs and markings, LTA is conducting a user experience study in two phases. The first phase, which was held in March 2026 at Bayshore Drive, tested road markings such as the oval blue ‘E’ symbol and a 25-metre stretch of road painted in blue. During Phase 1 of the study, skid resistance tests were conducted on the road markings to ensure that the surfaces of the road markings met standards required for safe road surfaces. LTA also tested the visibility of the road signs and markings.
New ERP 2 Road Signs and Markings to be Trialled at Five New Locations
5. LTA has refined the designs of the ERP road signs and markings for the second phase of the study, taking into account feedback from the first phase. Five different combinations of road signs and markings will be tested across five expressways and arterial roads from 1 June to 31 July 2026 (Annex A).
6. The selected locations are existing ERP charging locations and they represent a range of traffic and road conditions. This will enable comprehensive testing across different scenarios. The findings from the study will guide the development of clear and intuitive visual cues to support a smooth transition to the gantry-less ERP 2 system when it is implemented from 1 January 2027.
7. About 1,000 motorists will participate in the second phase of the study. LTA is partnering the Automobile Association of Singapore, Singapore Road Safety Council, as well as other stakeholders from the motoring community, to invite motorists to participate in the study. They will also experience the full suite of upcoming OBU functionalities, including more ERP-related notifications, automatic payment of checkpoint tolls and using the OBU’s touchscreen display for roadside parking payments.
8. Motorists not participating in the user experience study may also provide us their feedback on the trial road signs and markings by sending in their feedback to LTA at LTA_Pilot_GNSS@lta.gov.sg by 31 July 2026.
Transition to ERP2
9. From 1 January 2027, all ERP charging will be done via GNSS charging and the finalised new signs and markings from the user experience study will serve as the visual cues for motorists on charging points. There will no change to the current congestion pricing framework for now.
