How to Escape a Road Tunnel in a Zombie Apocalypse

Posted on | 26 Sep 2025

You’re driving along the expressway and cruise your way into a road tunnel.

Suddenly, traffic comes to a halt. After a slight confusion, you look up and see throngs of zombies emerging like a wave, trudging towards the lines of cars.

How do you get out of a road tunnel in a zombie apocalypse?

Whether you’re a seasoned motorist, drive with a P-plate, or you’ve earned platinum status in ride booking apps, everyone needs to know what to do when facing a sea of zombies (and other types of emergencies) while travelling in a road tunnel.

So you swerved your car to avoid a zombie, and accidentally crashed your car.

Now what?

In the unfortunate scenario where you are involved in an accident while driving in a road tunnel, first examine yourself and your passengers for injuries. Step out of the vehicle only when it is safe to do so.

If there are no injuries, exchange personal particulars with the other drivers involved. All parties should move off as soon as possible.

Otherwise, call 995 or 999 if someone is injured and needs medical attention. In this case, do not move your vehicle. Provide your exact location by referring to the nearest emergency exit door labels, slip road names or kilometre markings on the wall panels.

Emergency SOS phones are located at alternate fire service cabinets next to road shoulder. You can also use them if you are unable to drive off or require any other assistance.

When your engine is zombified

Should your vehicle decide to stop co-operating – of all places, in a tunnel and in the middle of an apocalypse! – you’ll want to follow the standard steps: stop your vehicle along the road shoulder and switch on your hazard lights.

Call LTA for assistance at 1800-2255 582 or use the nearest emergency SOS phone located every 100 metres (100m) next to the road shoulder. For safety, stand on the raised platform beside the road shoulder while waiting for assistance.

No matter how simple it may seem, you and your passengers should not try to repair the vehicle or change your tyres by yourselves whilst in a tunnel. Wait for professional help to arrive and let them bring you and your vehicle out of the tunnel safely.

Sometimes where there is chaos, there is fire. It’s hard to stay cool when your car is ablaze, but you need to try and stop your vehicle along the road shoulder instead of remaining in one of the lanes. Quickly switch off your vehicle’s ignition. You and your passengers should move away from the vehicle as quickly as you can.

Call 995 or use the emergency SOS phones. Alternatively, activate the fire alarm by breaking the break-glass unit located at the fire service cabinets next to road shoulder.

When you’ve figured out that it’s a bad idea being in a tunnel during a zombie apocalypse (or when there is smoke or fire), what can you do?

If you ever need to evacuate a road tunnel on foot, you can use the escape staircases located every 500m next to the left-most lane. Their doors are marked by green panels and have flashing blue and white lights. Doors on the right-most lane will lead you to the opposite bound tunnel, so don’t get confused!

If you’re facing zombies in the Woodsville Tunnel or Fort Canning Tunnel, head to the tunnel’s nearest entrances and exits instead.

We recommend motorists to switch on their FM radios in tunnels, not just to listen to our local DJs’ hilarious jokes, but to be alerted of major traffic incidents, especially when in the tunnels.

If you happen to witness any traffic accident, fire or vehicle breakdown, don’t keep it to yourself and your favourite group chats. We need community spirit during an apocalypse or in any other type of emergency!

Call 999/995 or our hotline at 1800-2255 582 to alert our team. Sometimes those involved in these incidents are unable to contact us, in which case your thoughtful gesture goes a long way. If you see any emergency vehicles approaching from behind your vehicle, give way to these emergency vehicles too.

Meanwhile, follow the lane use signs which will indicate if any of the lanes are temporarily closed.

Stay informed and stay safe.

And don’t drive out without your zombie apocalypse survival kit!
