10 places better accessed by walking, cycling or riding along the East-West and Circle Lines.

You’ve probably heard the phrase “East side, best side”. With vibrant food options and proximity to the beach, there might be some basis to those claims. But the west can definitely hold its ground with a wide range of dining spots, heritage locations and parks—all of which are easily accessible by foot, bicycle or taking a ride on public transport.

Check out some of these Walk, Cycle, Ride highlights that you can find on the East-West Line (EWL) and Circle Line (CCL) as you move lite and easily towards the west of Singapore.

#1 Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park

Stretching from Bishan to Thomson, Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park offers scenic views of a naturalised meandering river cutting through banks of wildflowers—the perfect spot to picnic and enjoy the view. Photographers can go trigger happy at the landscape pond, and even have the chance to see birds like the Purple Heron and White Breasted Waterhen.

With playgrounds and even a dog run, this park offers something for all members of the family to enjoy!

Do note though that for those looking to cycle through the park, the nearest bike rentals are at the GoCycling outlet at Ang Mo Kio.

How to get there
Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is around 1km away from Bishan MRT station on the CCL. You can walk, cycle, or hop on bus 71 to reach.

#2 Botanic Gardens

True to its status as a UNESCO Heritage Site, Singapore Botanic Gardens offers an immense range of flora and fauna—from the 60,000 plants in the National Orchid Garden, to the heritage trees scattered around the park and the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden for kids. Take your time to stroll through the luscious greenery, picnic along the banks of Eco-Lake, enjoy a free concert and more!

How to get there
Alight at Botanic Gardens MRT station on the CCL to access the Bukit Timah entrance. If you wander too far in, you can always exit from the Nassim entrance and hop on the Thomson-East Coast Line at Napier MRT station!

#3 One Holland Village

Holland Village has always been known for its lively café and bar scene, but now dining options have increased with the new One Holland Village mall opening!

Swing by for your fix of dimsum, ramen, and more. As a plus, the mall is also pet-friendly with poop bag dispensers, water coolers, “pet parking” stations, and over 20 eateries and stores that welcome your furry family member!

#4 Haw Par Villa

Haw Par Villa, once known as Tiger Balm Gardens, is a must visit for culture and heritage buffs. The biggest highlight is Hell’s Museum, a curated space that dives into traditions about death and the afterlife. For those who dare, this promises a hell of a time!

Hell’s Museum is just a stone’s throw away from Haw Par Villa MRT station on the CCL.

#5 Labrador Nature Reserve

Nature lovers will rejoice at the diversity of Labrador Nature Reserve’s terrains.

Stroll along Berlayer Creek Boardwalk for sights of dense mangrove forests and mudflats—with a chance to spot the Giant Mudskipper. Then make your way down Bukit Chermin Boardwalk for breathtaking views of the sea.

Keen on some Singapore history? Follow the trail at the entrance of the nature reserve to Fort Pasir Panjang, and take a look at the statues and replicas of 6-inch gun batteries used by the British troops.

Labrador Nature Reserve is 500m from Labrador MRT station on the CCL.

#6 Tiong Bahru

The east side might have Joo Chiat for its cafes, but closer to the west you’ll find Tiong Bahru, a quaint neighbourhood packed with heritage and eateries alike. Follow the Tiong Bahru trail to learn more about the history of the area, or simply burn off the brunch calories by wandering around in search of Yip Yew Chong’s beautiful murals depicting life in the past.

With the pedestrianisation of Eng Hoon Street and widening of footpaths along Seng Poh Road and Lim Liak Street, exploring this area on foot is only getting easier!

Exit at Tiong Bahru MRT station on the EWL and explore the area on foot.

#7 Kallang Riverside Park

A major highlight of Kallang Riverside Park is the huge clusters of Bougainvilleas. So cycle, skate, jog or stroll along the smooth park tracks in search of the glorious sight of these pink flowers blooming.

If you’re up for a little more burn, you can even follow the Kallang Park Connector all the way to Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park!

Take bus 11 from Stadium MRT station on the CCL or walk 400m from Kallang MRT station on the EWL

#8 Jurong Lake Gardens

East Coast Park may have its Coastal Playgrove and Marine Cove Playground, but on the other side of the island at Jurong Lake Gardens is Clusia Cove for kids to have their water adventures, and the Forest Ramble for ziplines, rope bridges and more!

Instagrammers will also love the photo opportunities at this park, from the Lalang-like grassing to the “lone tree”. Did you know that it’s made of recycled iron bars?

Walk around 3 minutes from Exit A of Lakeside MRT station on the EWL.

#9 Raffles Marina

Keen on learning to wakeboard, wakesurf or wakeskate? Pop down to Maxout at Raffles Marina for a splashing good time!

And if you’re looking for a more low-key activity, simply take a stroll along the pier to the Raffles Marina Lighthouse. Time your visit to be during sunset hours for the best views!

Walk around 550m from Tuas Link MRT station on the EWL.

#10 Old Airport Road Food Centre*

From western-styled barbecued food to local favourites like ban mian, prawn noodles and hokkien mee—you name it, the Old Airport Road Food Centre has it. Kway Chap lovers will definitely want to try the Blanco Court Kway Chap, which was awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand between 2019 to 2022!

*Important note: The Old Airport Road Food Centre is currently undergoing renovations till 30 September 2024. Visit this spot after the food centre opens!

Old Airport Road Food Centre is a 5-minute walk from Dakota MRT station and Mountbatten station, both on the CCL.
