In the 1970s, a transportation unit existed in the Public Works Department (PWD) that was in charge of everything—building the first library, erecting pedestrian overhead bridges and bus shelters, and an array of other road-building projects.
The small transportation unit has since grown into an organisation dedicated to developing a land transport system for all Singapore Citizens.
The Land Transport Authority was established on 1 September 1995, after the merger of four public sector entities:
- Registry of Vehicles
- Mass Rapid Transit Corporation
- Roads & Transportation Division of the Public Works Department
- Land Transportation Division of the Ministry of Communications
