Intelligent Transport Systems

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) is at the heart of what keeps us safe in our city’s roads and tunnel systems. In land-scarce Singapore, ITS’ sophisticated traffic and control systems maximise road network efficiency capacity as well as monitor and manage  traffic flow.

The ITS infrastructure spans over 164 km of expressways and road tunnel systems, including the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE), Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE), Central Expressway (CTE), Fort Canning Tunnel (FCT) and Woodsville Tunnel (WVT).

Smart Mobility 2030 is jointly developed by LTA and the Intelligent Transportation Society Singapore (ITSS). It consolidates the perspectives from the Authority and the industry, paving the way for a more comprehensive and sustainable ITS ecosystem in Singapore in the coming years till 2030.

Smart Mobility 2030 outlines the broad strategies that are essential for the successful implementation of ITS initiatives and charts the key focal areas to meet transport challenges in a systematic and coordinated manner for a smarter future urban mobility.

SAVI is a joint partnership between LTA and A*STAR to provide a technical platform for industry partners and stakeholders to conduct research and development (R&D) and test-bedding of AV technology, applications and solutions.

One of the focus areas under SAVI is to prepare technical and statutory requirements for future deployment of AVs in Singapore. Demarcated routes in one-north have been identified by LTA and JTC to support the testing of AVs by interested parties.

How does ITS benefit motorists?

We rely on innovative infocomm and ITS solutions to make roads safer and keep traffic flowing smoothly. ITS allow timely dissemination of traffic information which is key to help motorists take the best route to their destinations. The ITS solution also plays a role in protecting the environment and contributes towards cleaner air and better quality of life for Singaporeans. This makes Singapore a more liveable city and gives motorists more pleasant journeys on the roads.

ITS Network

Some of the vital components within the ITS network include:

Expressway Monitoring & Advisory System (EMAS)

Monitors traffic along expressways, alerts motorists of traffic incidents and ensures swift response to these incidents.

Traffic Lights

Green Link Determining (GLIDE) System

Monitors, adjusts and optimises green time in an intelligent and adaptive manner to provide “green-wave” along main roads in response to changing traffic demand.

Junction Electronic Eyes

Junction Electronic Eyes (J-Eyes)

A system of surveillance cameras that monitor the traffic condition at major signalised junctions.

Electronic Regulatory Sign

Electronic Regulatory Signs

Displays prohibited turning movements during specific periods

Uses taxis equipped with Global Positioning System as probes on the road network to provide motorists with information on the traffic conditions island-wide.

Signalised Pedestrian Crossing

Signalised Pedestrian Crossing

Facilitates time-sharing of road space between motorists and pedestrians.

Parking Guidance System

Parking Guidance System

Provides real-time information on parking spaces availability of shopping malls at major shopping belts in Marina Centre, Orchard and Harbourfront to reduce circulation of traffic in these areas.

Green Man Plus

Green Man+

Extends green man time for both the elderly and pedestrians with disabilities to cross the road.

Did you know

We’re also extending the GMP scheme to 500 more pedestrian crossings island wide by 2014. The GMP scheme will also be extended to include pedestrians with disabilities.

While you are on the road, if you experience heavy traffic flow or would like to report incidents such as vehicle breakdown or accidents, please contact the ITS Centre by calling 1800-CALL LTA (1800-2255 582)
