Central Expressway (CTE)

Central Expressway

The Central Expressway (CTE) is the only expressway that connects the city to the northern areas of the island such as Toa Payoh, Bishan and Ang Mo Kio.

It spans 15.5km and is connected with the Seletar Expressway and Tampines Expressway.

Construction of the CTE was conducted in phases:

  • From Seletar to Bukit Timah Road (next to Cavenagh Road), which was opened on 17 June 1989
  • From Chin Swee Road in Chinatown to the Ayer Rajah Expressway in Radin Mas
  • Construction of two tunnels that run along the Singapore River, Fort Canning and Orchard area

Evening Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) hours were first introduced for the CTE.

The CTE’s southern end begins at Bukit Merah and runs through the Central Area, Toa Payoh, Bishan, Serangoon and Ang Mo Kio.
